Dental Restorations in Edmonton, AB

Restorative dentistry is the process of repairing a damaged tooth or replacing missing teeth.

For patients with advanced tooth decay, a fractured tooth, or an otherwise weakened tooth surface, common dental restorations like crowns and fillings are often recommended to repair these issues and preserve the structure of your tooth. For missing teeth, dental bridges are typically recommended as a way to fill the missing space and prevent the adjacent teeth from shifting.

In some instances, cosmetic restorations or dental implants may also be recommended depending on the preference of a patient. These options are usually suggested for individuals who may be seeking a restoration that blends in more seamlessly with their natural teeth.

Types of Dental Restoration.

Types of Dental Restorations

There are two main types of dental restorations, direct and indirect restorations.

Direct restorations are restorations that can be fabricated and completed within the mouth and do not require a dental laboratory. The most common types of direct restorations are composite resin fillings and amalgam fillings. These can be created here in our office, are bonded directly inside your mouth, and can usually be placed in one appointment.

Indirect restorations, including crowns and bridges, require a dental laboratory or a milling machine to create. These restorations are typically used to repair more severe damage and require at least two appointments to complete. The first appointment will be to obtain the required information to create the crown or bridge and prepare the tooth for restoration. The second appointment will be to check the fit of the restoration and bond it in place.

If you’re interested in finding out more about each type of restoration and how they are used, we have provided more information about the four main types for you below.

Composite Fillings

Composite fillings are often called white fillings. They are soft plastic resin bonded (“glued”) to your tooth structure microscopically. Composite fillings are aesthetic since they come in different shades and can be matched to your tooth colour. Composite fillings were used primarily on anterior teeth when they were first introduced, but advanced technology has made composite filling materials stronger and useful for all teeth. They are very durable and can keep your bright smile for years.

Amalgam fillings are “silver” fillings. They are made of safe mercury alloys and have been used as filling material for over 100 years. They are strong and long lasting. With the new technology for composite filling material, amalgam fillings are less popular but in some situations (e.g., bleeding or uncontrollable moisture), dentists would still prefer amalgam over composite fillings.

A crown is sometimes referred to as “a cap”. Its main objective is to cover a tooth and restore its proper shape and size. In the event of missing teeth, a dental bridge can be used to as the replacement. Besides filling the space and enhancing the chewing ability or aesthetics, a dental bridge can prevent other teeth (especially the teeth posterior to the space) from drifting or tilting.
